Roads in India are littered with potholes that have caused everything from worry and anger to death, but one pothole turned out to be a lifesaver for an 80-year-old man in the Indian city of Haryana.

According to Indian news channel 'NDTV', the body of Darshan Singh Brar, who was declared dead by doctors, was being taken from Patiala to his home near Karnal, where bereaved relatives had gathered and his last rites were being performed. Food was kept and firewood was collected. In such a situation, the ambulance hit a pit.

Darshan Singh's family said his grandson, who was with him in the ambulance, saw him waving his hand and asked the ambulance driver to go to a nearby hospital after noticing a heartbeat. There the doctors declared him alive.

Darshan Singh, an 80-year-old heart patient, is now undergoing treatment at a hospital in Karnal, where his condition is said to be critical. The family has termed the incident as a miracle and they are hoping for a speedy recovery.

Hope out of despair

Darshan Singh's grandson Balwan Singh said that his grandfather had been on ventilator for four days and on Thursday morning doctors said that his heart had stopped beating. He was taken off the ventilator and declared brought dead.

Balwan Singh said, 'My brother in Patiala informed us about our grandfather's death around 9 am on Thursday, and he took him in an ambulance to Nesing (about 100 km away) for his last rites. We informed our relatives and other local residents who knew them. And they had already gathered to mourn his passing. A tent was set up and food was also arranged for the mourners. We also had firewood for the last rites.

When the ambulance was near Dhand village in Kaithal, Haryana, it hit a ditch and Balwan's brother saw Darshan Singh Brar holding out his hand. Shocked, he checked the heartbeat and on realizing it took the 80-year-old to a nearby hospital.

Doctors at the hospital confirmed that Darshan Singh Brar was alive and breathing and he was then referred to a hospital in Nesing, from where he was taken to NP Rawal Hospital in Karnal, the family said.

"This is a miracle," Balwan Singh said. Now we are hoping that my grandfather will recover soon. Everyone, who had gathered to mourn his death, congratulated us, and we requested them to eat the food we had prepared. It is the grace of God that he is breathing now and we hope that he will get better."
